One server has a ceiling. Here is what is past it.

Memory makes a world bigger, not busier. Once a server fills up you are up against the game's own engine, so what changes is the shape of the setup, not the size of the box.

Where the ceiling comes from

Vanilla and Paper run a world on one thread. Mobs, redstone, chunks and every player's movement queue behind it, so more players means a longer tick.

Cores
A second core cannot help with that one world.
Memory
Buys bigger worlds and heavier modpacks, not more players.
One tick, one threadbudget 50 ms
A comfortable server22 ms
The same server, full68 ms

The world is recalculated twenty times a second. Miss the 50 ms budget and the tick rate drops, that is the lag everyone feels.

Two ways past it

Regions on separate threads

Each shade is a thread. Players far apart stop waiting for each other.

Multi-threaded server software

Folia splits one world into regions and ticks independent regions in parallel. It suits maps where the population is spread out rather than crowded into one place.

Worth knowing: a different platform, not a setting. Most Paper plugins need a Folia-aware build. Send your plugin list and we check it before anything is promised.

Capacity grows by adding servers, not by making one bigger.

A proxy network

Velocity or BungeeCord sits in front and moves players between servers, lobby, survival, events, or one map split by region. This is how large networks are built.

Worth knowing: players only share a world with the server they are on, so chat, economy and player data need a plugin and a database behind them.

Which one you probably want

01

Popular server that stutters at peak

Tune first, a profiler usually finds a plugin or chunk-loading problem long before hardware is the limit.

  • Paper
  • spark
02

One big survival world, players spread out

A Folia-style build, once the plugin list allows it.

  • Folia
03

Lobby, minigames, several maps

A proxy network. Split by purpose, grow by adding servers.

  • Velocity
  • BungeeCord
04

A public network with a brand

A proxy network, plus a plan for databases, backups and moderation.

  • Velocity
  • Database
  • Backups

How we would approach it

Send the size you are planning for, your plugin or mod list, and what the server is for. You get back a setup, what it costs to run, and where it will actually break, including when one well-tuned server is still the right answer.
